Obituary for Janet Marie Russell Abadie

A Funeral Mass was held for Janet Marie Russell Abadie, at Saint Francis Xavier Church, in Metairie, Louisiana.

Janet passed away peacefully on December 9, 2020 at the age of 94, in Starkville, Mississippi, in the home with her son and daughter-in-law. Janet moved to Mississippi at the beginning pandemic.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Henry Russell and Julia Maude Reagan Russell of New York; sisters, Marjorie Russell Rader (T.C.) of Jackson, Mississippi, and Martha “Tuffie” Russell Connevey (Will); and her former husband, Bernard” Ben” Peter Abadie.

Janet was the devoted mother of Julia A. Gooch ( David) and Dr. Ben R. Abadie ( Carolyn Brown). She was also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many cousins in New York.

Janet’s father, a Chemical Engineer with Standard Oil Company and was transferred often. The family lived in Woodbury, New Jersey, where Janet was born on May 30, 1926, Chicago, IL, Georgia, Florida, and finally settling in Houma, Louisiana, in the 1940s, when her father began working in the seafood industry. Janet later moved to New Orleans to attend Mercy School of Nursing, where she received an R.N. Degree and also met her future husband.

Janet was a Mayflower Descendant and a Colonial Dame. She enjoyed participating in her groups, the Tulane Newcomers Club, Les Nouvelles, the Lake Vista Women’s and Garden Clubs, her weekly card group with friends of over 50 years and her Afternoon Group at Delimon Place, where she moved after Hurricane Katrina.

Janet was a shining light of grace and kindness. She had a truly giving spirit, great warmth, faith and infectious laugh, that were a blessing to all who knew her. She was a wonderful cook and baker, enjoyed entertaining and her happy times with her family and many friends, including the Redmanns, who were like family. As noted by many, you always felt comfortable in her presence. She is greatly missed; until we meet again.
